Kenzie & Gennaro are hired by a psychiatrist to keep an eye on her son, against whom the boyfriend of a client has made some unsubtle threats. What starts as a relatively straightforward babysitting job quickly degenerates into something much more nightmarish.
Compared to A Drink Before the War, Darkness, Take My Hand almost felt like it was written by another author entirely. Gone is the zippy, somewhat obvious, plot and wisecracking between the two leads. This was a grim and dark read that had a few comic moments to lighten the tone but was pretty unrelenting regardless. The tension and dread was constantly being ramped up and up and didn't let go until the disturbing and violent conclusion.
Great book and looking forward to the next installment.
