Battle Royale - Koushun Takami, Yuji Oniki Along with Ichi The Killer, Battle Royale were the films that really got me into Asian Cinema, finally i've read the book, it's great, really entertaining read, violent but then it's supposed to be.

Forty-two pupils sent to an island and ordered to kill each other until only one remains. Sent out a classroom one by one they are each given a bag containing a different weapon, from a shotgun to an uzi through to a sickle or potassium cyanide.

Having the pupils thoughts on the situation they are placed in works well as they struggle to deal with being on the island. Some want to work together to try and escape, some want to kill.

Shuya and Noriko are the main characters, and most of the novel's action is through their eyes. These are nice, normal, everyday kids like the ones who live down the street, but suddenly they're faced with their friends and classmates... wanting to kill them. Takami does a great job exploring their emotions as they struggle to keep their sanity and lives.
