Day of the Triffids starts with Bill Masen in hospital eyes bandaged whilst everyone else is watching the meteor shower outside, the following day when no hospital staff attend to him he takes his bandages off to find everyone has been blinded.
Bill Masen has been in hospital due to being attacked by the poisonous stinger of a triffid, a plant that has appeared that can walk but also has a taste for flesh.
These plants were kept and farmed for their oil. After the comet shower triffids begin escaping confinement and easily kill large numbers of blinded people.
The story then follows Bill Masen and various people he meets across London and beyond trying to survive whilst triffids gather and attack.
I enjoyed the first part of the book but found once he starts encountering various other people both sighted and blinded it tends to jump around a bit and seems almost rushed especially towards the end with different factions and colonies looking for survivors.
