In a post-apocalyptic America, a drifter named Gordon Krantz finds himself robbed in the hills of all his possessions. Whilst trying to track those responsible he finds an old mail truck with a long dead postman inside, deciding to take the uniform he finds himself creating a myth of a Restored United States for food and shelter.
This snowballs through communities as people seek to believe in something again. This leads to war against the influx of "hypersurvivalists" who are trying to do the rape and pillage routine.
The fact kevin Costner turned this into a movie had put me off reading but its actually an enjoyable read as Krantz becomes more responsible for his deeds and recognising the role he has to help the community of Corvallis, Oregon.
